Today I am going to touch on whiskeys instead of cognacs.
Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique
Firstly, I was shocked to find out the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique was selling for RM910 at Jaya Grocer (The Gardens).
The last time I bought a bottle of the Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique at Bangsar Shopping Centre, it only cost me less than RM500. And that was after they increased the price because this said Taiwan whiskey was awarded the Best Whiskey for 2015.
I shared my Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique with a few people and those who were whiskey drinkers said it was good. But, my uncle and myself, both cognac lovers, did not enjoy it over a Chinese dinner and after a glass, we switched to Wolf Blass Black Label (red wine), hahaha.
Come to think of it, I should have kept my Kavalan and “shiok sendiri” to know that the price have doubled since I bought it in 2015. I wonder how much my empty bottle and box is worth? hahaha.
Whenever we have a family dinner (with my grandpa or one of my uncles), there is sure to be a bottle of cognac on the table. I tried the Macallan 12 Years, for the very first time a few years back, over a Chinese dinner and to my surprised I really enjoyed it (found it to be sweet!). And it was because of this, I started to try various types of whiskeys; but, since then, I have never really enjoyed a glass of whiskey. Nothing beats the first time, hahaha.
Currently, as of June 2017, we can buy the Macallan 12, Macallan 12 Fine Oak and Macallan 12 Double Cask all for the same price of RM359 at Jaya Grocer (The Gardens – I forgot to take a photo of it). AEON at Mid Valley is selling the Macallan 12 for RM400+
Both the Macallan 12 Fine Oak and Double Cask are also selling for the same price of AUD109 at Dan Murphy’s in Melbourne. So, the price of RM359 at Jaya Grocer is very reasonable.
During Chinese New Year 2017, my uncle opened his bottle of Macallan 18 (costing more than RM1K in KL) for us to try and I have nothing much to complain; but, like I said earlier, I cannot find the same joy I had when I tried the Macallan 12 for the first time, hahaha.
If you are in Melbourne, I recommend that you drop by Dan Murphy’s and get yourself a bottle of the Yamazaki 12 for AUD199. There’s a Dan Murphy’s in QV Melbourne CBD. It’s so much cheaper than the price in KL where a bottle cost more than RM1.1K
The last time I checked in May 2017, Dan Murphy’s still had the Yamazaki 12 in stock.
Yamazaki 12 and 18 – Update
Update August 2017 – I was at Jaya Grocer @ The Gardens and was shocked to see that the prices of Yamazaki 12 and 18 being sold at RM1399 and RM4888 respectively.
When I was in Melbourne back in July 2017, Dan Murphy’s was still selling the Yamazaki at AUD200. So the Yamazaki being sold for RM1399 at Jaya Grocer is like double the price!
RM4888 for a Yamazaki 18, that’s ridiculous. I have tried the Yamazaki 18 before and it’s not to say it is freaking fantastic.
If you ask me, I would say we are being ripped off big time for buying the Yamazaki 12 & 18 in Malaysia. If you are willing to burn RM1399 for a Yamazaki 12, I recommend that you instead get a bottle of the wonderful Macallan Rare Cask Black (see below) which is selling for RM1900 at Eraman. And with the Eraman Privilege Card where we are entitled to 10% discount, a bottle will cost us just slightly above RM1700.
And as for the Yamazaki 18 price of RM4888, you can get 2 bottles of Macallan Rare Cask Black and still have balance money of more than RM1400 to get yourself close to 3 bottles of Macallan 12 Years!!!
So what would be a reasonable price for the Yamazaki 18 in Malaysia? Seriously, it should be much higher compared to a few years ago considering that our Ringgit has weaken substantially. But for your reference, it was sold at Dan Murphy’s for AUD798 (about RM 2713 based in AUD/MYR 3.4) and from surfing, I found a seller quoting it for USD589.99 (about RM2500 based on USD/MYR 4.3).
Hibiki Japanese Harmony
Update August 2017
As for the Hibiki Japanese Harmony, it is being sold for RM547.90 at Jaya Grocer as of August 2017 versus AUD119.99 in Melbourne. So the price is about 25% more in KL, which is acceptable unlike Yamazaki 12 price where it is like 100% more.
Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve
If you are a Whiskey Collector, go fast fast to AEON where you can get the Limited Edition Johnnie Walker Gold Reserve which comes in a very cool reflective bottle plus 2 whiskey glasses for just RM279 (RM309 at Jaya Grocer).
Macallan Rare Cask Black
Update – July 2017
I visited my brother in-law at his home and he opened his bottle of Macallan Rare Cask Black! Boy, I tell you, it was freaking good. I had the Macallan Rare Cask Black on the rocks and the aroma was wonderful and the taste was equally fantastic. This is most probably the best whisky I have tasted, anytime better than Yamazaki 18 and Kavalan Solist Vinho Barrique.
The Macallan Rare Cask Black is being sold at Eraman Duty Free for about RM1,900.00
